Gullible/Blurt Split Reviewed In Give Me Back #51

I like CT's stories. He has an eloquent way of debauchery and the aftermath. Punk stories from a maturing perspective. In that way Gullible kind of reminds me of Rice Harvester or Complete Control. I'm into it. The inside cover and first couple pages of the Blurt side look great. This issue is a collection of "drunk stories." There are things that I would enjoy witnessing, hearing about or reading about in moderation, but together in a group I found it mind-numbing. The titles by themselves are more entertaining: "tongue dried," ""rug ppuked," "friends ruined," and "pants ripped." If you get this for the Gullible side you'll probably enjoy both.

Gullible/Blurt Split Makes A Splash On The Internet

The split is about traveling and drinking. I am familiar with the work
of Lew (Blurt!), but I have not familiarized myself with Chris
(Gullible). Chris is linked more with the whole band dynamic, where Lew
comes off as an individual that has been afflicted with wanderlust. I
must say that I am jealous at all the places that both individuals go.
As someone that collects 40 ounce bottles, I'm sure Lew has tapped
through a few I don't have. Anyways, each author has their own style.
While the split is set up so that 24 pages are one zine and the other
twenty-four pages (accessed by flipping over the zine) are the other,
there seems to be a lot of unity between the two writers. While a
number of splits seem to be working at different levels, Chris and
Lew's work during this split show that splits can work. While the drink-heavy of prose written by Lew can get a little tiring, eir
writing during this issue has some of the funniest lines that I've read
in zinedom this year. For example, there is just a page of things that
individuals said to eir in order to make Lew remember what had happened
during the last night. On the other hand, there is another high point
of the zine in Chris' side of the split, where ey points out a tip list
for those individuals going out on the road (which I believe was reprinted
in another zine, but the readership I believe is different between the
two). Get a copy.

"This zine rules! Both of these guys are great writers and great storytellers with great stories to tell. This issue of Blurt! is really different than the other ones I've read. The writing style has switched to some form of stream of consciousness writing that would have been really easy to do badly, but comes off really well. It's almost like poetry or somethin'. If you're into these kinds of zines, you've probably read these guys' work before, and if you haven't then too bad. Either way, you should definitely get this."

"Pretty interesting personal split here. Gullible is mainly personal stories, somewhat Cometbus-style, with some stuff about life being on tour, etc. Blurt is all about drinking stories, and some pretty funny ones at that. It probably tells you something about my sense of humor and level of mental development that I found the drinking stories much more engaging. Cool."

This is the newest issue of Gullible, and it's a split with Lew Houston's Blurt zine. Lew talks about booze the whole time, and I tell some tour stories, and some Richmond stories. We're both proud of it.
